What should you know when dealing with controlled substance drugs?

There may be several doubts on controlled substance regulations, license registration that practitioners and those dealing with controlled substances directly may have about the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). We will help you understand DEA controlled substance license and registration procedures better.

Physicians writing DEA prescriptions for controlled substances must hold controlled substances license registration. The practitioner will be given a DEA registration number, which acts as identification of the DEA practitioner and each prescription must carry the controlled substance license registration number given by the DEA.

How should you register to the DEA?

The applicant’s compliance with the state license and regulations determines their eligibility for their registration with the DEA. Apart from the DEA license, some states require a separate state-issued controlled substance regulation license along with your medical license Those who need a DEA controlled substance license registration are medical practitioners, veterinary practitioners, hospitals, teaching instructors, institutes that teach DEA compliance on controlled substances, retailers and pharmacies dealing with controlled substances. The registration process takes from four to six weeks.

If the practitioner practices in one or more locations, then the practitioner requires separate DEA and federal government licenses for each location. However, practitioners practicing at one location in the same state do not require more than one DEA controlled substance license registration in the same state. However, if you are practicing in separate states and prescribing controlled substances in each state then a controlled substance license registration in each of the practicing states is a must. Depending on the nature of your practice you may be required to have multiple registrations. Whenever the practitioner moves to a new location for practicing and prescribing controlled substances, a new DEA controlled substance license registration is required.

DEA registrations are valid for three years and must be renewed before the controlled substance license registration expires. The date is correlated to the date of the first issue of the registration. The initial period of registration can be for 28 months or the maximum is for 39 months, however, after the first, the following will be for three years. Make sure you renew the registration ahead of the expiry date so that you can continue to practice uninterrupted. For DEA controlled substance license and regulation renewal, DEA Form 224a needs to be submitted. You cannot miss the renewal date if you are attentive and have not changed your address. The DEA is now emailing the renewal reminders since 2017. The renewal reminder is sent out sixty-five days before the DEA registration expires giving enough time to apply for renewal. DAE advises applicants to submit the renewal form four weeks before the expiry of the registration.

The DEA renewal involves a fee revised after Oct 1, 2020, each category has separate registration fees. The dispensing practitioner is the broadest category that most practitioners fall into and the renewal and registration fee is $888 on Oct 2021. You can visit the DEA registered website for more information on the fees of other categories.

Many times the renewal of the DEA registration is delayed, applicants can continue to practice with controlled substances beyond the expiration of their registration if the renewal application was submitted ahead of expiry within the DEA mentioned stipulated time. In case of delay of submission of the renewal form, and expiry of the registration, the DEA can reinstate within a month the controlled substance license registration. However, if the renewal takes more than a month, an application for a new registration needs to be submitted. If you fail to submit a timely controlled substance renewal application you will not be permitted to handle controlled substance drugs until your controlled substance license regulation is not renewed.
